What happens around an aircraft while it is landing?

Thanks to the twitter stream of @fgrau I came across this fantastic video of a Swiss Airbus A340 landing during a foggy night at Zurich airport (published by Jalopnik).

In it you can clearly appreciate all the different aerodynamic forces at play, such as the amazing wingtip vortices that form around the airplane while it is landing.
