New podcast episode with IATA’s Chief Economist, Marie Owens Thomsen
Our guest on this episode of the podcast is Marie Owens Thomsen, Chief Economist and VP Sustainability at IATA, the International Air Transport Association, which is the main industry organization of the global airline industry.
Marie is a regular speaker at industry conferences, representing IATA on matters related to sustainability and decarbonization with a straightforwardness which, I am sure, leaves no one indifferent.
So, this time Marie has come on the podcast to explain how IATA thinks the current regulatory framework is ill suited to achieve Net Zero by 2050, a goal, which, by the way, IATA supports.
So, in this conversation Marie will explain how this is the case, in particular, of the European approach, with mandates failing to stimulate SAF production while, at the same time, putting the broader international decarbonization framework under CORSIA in jeopardy.
Quite coincidentally, this conversation was recorded just a few weeks before the EU released its new proposal for the reform of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) alongside a number of other proposals meant to stimulate the adoption of cleaner aviation technologies. So, while this ETS reform proposal was looming at the time we recorded this episode, its exact contents were not yet known. Some specific items we talked about in this episode may require further review in light of the new information, but I think the broader outline is still quite current.
So, without further ado, tune in for an intense, unconventional and fascinating chat with IATA’s Chief Economist Marie Owens Thomsen!
