On CNN: trains vs. planes, the debate is served!
Environmental concerns are leading to a sort of rail renaissance in Europe.
In truth, provided there is proper infrastructure in place, train travel makes a lot of sense in many parts of Europe, where distances between densely populated areas are relatively short.
This has led some governments, like those in France and Austria, to pursue restrictive policies towards short haul air travel, although in practical terms the effects are negligible. Given a proper alternative, most travellers on short segments gravitate towards the train anyways, because it simply makes sense.
But there are quite a few nuances to this politically-charged debate: are all flights and airlines treated equally? Is current rail infrastructure really able to make a dent in intra-European air travel figures?
And, perhaps more importantly, are trains and planes really competitors or they can work together to provide more environmentally sound travel options?
For my latest CNN piece I talked with a handful of experts to try to make sense of all this!
