Interview w/ Jaunt Air Mobility, SAF outlook & more (The Allplane Newsletter #93)

Sustainable Aviation Podcast

Simon I. Briceno, CCO of Jaunt Air Mobility shares some fascinating details about this rather unique eVTOL concept that combines some of the most prominent features of fixed wing aircraft and rotorcraft in a 100% battery electric vehicle. LISTEN.

Electric Aviation

Dovetail Electric Aviation will supply Monte Aircraft Leasing with 50 electric propulsion kits to retrofit existing aircraft. Dovetail is a joint venture between Dante Aeronautical of Spain and Australia’s Sydney Aviation Holdings (which operates Sydney Seaplanes), BOTH have been on the podcast! You can listen to the respective episodes here (Dante Aeronautical) and here (Sydney Seaplanes)

Advanced Air Mobility

One of the main sticking points when it comes to the potential roll out of eVTOLs inurban areas is regulation. Well, now EASA has published the first prospective set of rules for the operation of air taxis in cities and opened them to consultation (until September 30th). With many eVTOL manufacturers expecting to launch around 2025-26, it’s important that some sort of regulatory framework is in place. LINK.

Vertical Aerospace’s VX4 is going to be powered by Li-Ion battery cells made by Taiwanese company E-One Moli Energy (Molicel). LINK.

Hydrogen Aviation

How does a flying fuel cell work? here’s a nice explanation

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

SkyNRG SAF outlook, from May but still valid since it outlines long term scenarios. Very comprehensive read! LINK.

Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport, in France, has been the setting of an experiment of sorts, with 5 different flights operating with a 30% SAF uptake and using optimizing flight paths to reduce fuel consumption (with the collaboration of Eurocontrol). LINK.

Other interesting stuff in Sustainable Flight

A map of the partners in the TULIPS project, an EU-funded initiative that gathers companies from across the Union in the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable aviation industry. LINK.

What else in aviation?

In the debate about limiting or even banning short haul flights, what sort of practical implications are we talking about. Here is what an hypothetical limit of 750km from The Netherlands would look like. Note also that this is also the type of range that some alternative propulsion technologies are expected to reach.

Helsinki airport has turned 70. A good opportunity to recollect some of the stories about one of my favourite airports and a leader in sustainability. LINK.

Etihad launched its own collection of NFTs called EY-Zero1. In this case, the piece of art will be 10 3D models of aircraft in Etihad’s fleet each with its own different livery. Well aware that NFTs and other blockchain/crypto minting activities have been criticized for their energy consumption and environmental footprint, Etihad promises to allocate all proceeds to SAF purchases and to make the carbon footprint of the NFTs fully trackable and transparent. Will see…this is a topic that I plan to look into in more detail shortly. LINK.
