100% SAF test in Sweden

This ATR 72-600 flight that landed today at Bromma airport, near Stockholm, Sweden, was quite remarkable, because it was the first time a commercial regional aircraft used 100% sustainable aviation fuel AND in both engines!

The flight, which is part of the certification process ATR is going through since late 2021 to enable its turboprops to run solely in SAF from, if all goes well, the year 2025 onwards.

Finnish energy company Neste, a world leader in SAF, Swedish airline Braathens Regional Airlines (also known as BRA, and whose plane was used for this flight), Swedavia (the Swedish airports operator) and engine maker Pratt & Whitney are also partners of this initiative.

The ATR-72-600 loaded with SAF in Malmoe, at the southern tip of Sweden and completed the 1h 20min flight to Bromma without incident.

As a matter of fact, these developments shouldn’t come as a surprise to the followers of this site, since we have explained quite a few times how Scandinavian coutnries want to lead in the progressive decarbonization of the commercial aviation industry .

But, very particulary, this theme will sound familiar to listeners of our podcast because over the last few months we’ve got the chance to talk with experts from some of the organizations involved in this and other similar projects.
