Biofuel mandate for New Zealand airlines soon

Looks like Norway may soon have company when it comes to having an aviation biofuel mandate.

Right on the other side of the World, the New Zealand government has announced its intention to introduce its own biofuel mandate for jet fuel, a measure that has rapidly been endorsed by the countries main carrier, Air New Zealand.

No specific figures have been given at this stage for the mandate, but if the Norwegian one is of any guide, it stands currently at 0.5%, meaning that this is the minimal proportion of sustainable jet fuel that needs to be mixed into the whole, but with the goal of increasing it to 30% by 2030 (got a podcast coming up shortly about this and other aspects of Norway’s green aviation strategy!). Sweden and Finland are also expected to join in this goal in due time.

This is not the only Nordic-Kiwi connection in the sustainable aviation space. New Zealand regional airline Sounds Air expects to become the first all-electric regional airline and to do so has signed a letter of intent to acquire several aircraft from Sweden-based Heart Aerospace, one of the most promising projects in the field of electric aircraft right now.
