Once upon a time, during the Soviet era, Aeroflot was the largest airline in the world, operating from helicopters reaching out to remotes communities throughout the world’s largest country all the way to long haul transcontinental air routes.

Those times are now past. Russia remains, of course, the largest country on earth, but its commercial aviation industry looks rather different: its a vibrant and dynamic ecosystem that has managed to keep growing (domestically) even during the covid-19 pandemic.

Aeroflot remains the dominant player, with a portfolio of brands that stretches from the ultra-low cost model all the way to premium business services, but a lot more is going on: the low cost model is making inroads, regional airlines are starting to link the dots in the map (80% of traffic still goes through the country’s two main cities!) and a new generation of Russian-made airliners is expected to come soon into service.

And to talk about all of this, we have the luxury of having on the podcast one of the professionals that knows most about Russia aviation.

Boris Rybak is the CEO of Infomost Consulting and ATO Events, which organize the top aviation conferences in the Russian-speaking world and produces several specialized industry publications.

An engineer by background, Boris Rybak, knows the Russian commercial aviation industry inside out and is sharing some of his insights on this episode of the podcast!
