This is one of the "crazy" ideas being studied by NASA.

Working under NASA's Convergent Aeronautics Solutions (CAS) project, several teams of scientists and engineers brainstorm and evaluate totally ground-breaking concepts in the field of aeronautics. Even if most of these ideas will be discarded, the point is they have the possibility of pursuing the most revolutionary approaches to solving aeronautical problems, free from the constraints of official deadlines and specifications, and pushing the frontier of aeronautical science further along the way.
