On CNN: the return of the Caspian Sea Monster and next gen Ekranoplans

In my latest article for CNN I revisit the topic of ekranoplans (or ground effect vehicles), a fascinating flying machine that had its heyday (well, sort of) in the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

One of the last remaining ekranoplans from that period has just been towed through the Caspian Sea to a new location in Russia’s southernmost region, where it is going to be the main attraction of a future military museum.

But the ekranoplan era may not be over yet, as a string of startups all over the world, from the US to Singapore and Russia, are working on a next generation of (smaller) ekranoplans both for cargo and passenger transportation.
