New podcast episode: regional airport management with Jordi Candela
Big airport hubs get all the headlines, but the airport ecosystem is quite diverse.
Their location in a rural area not too far from Barcelona international airport means that passenger flows are unlikely to be large at the two small regional airports, Lleida-Alguaire (ILD) and Andorra-La Seu (LEU) managed by Aeroports de Catalunya, the airport operator owned by the Catalan government.
However, a strategy to focus on a range of specialized services, from aircraft storage to flight training is starting to bear fruits. Lleida-Alguaire is going to treble its capacity after having become the largest Boeing 737 MAX storage site in Europe, while Andorra-La Seu aims to become the gateway to this tiny micro-nation in the Pyrenees that happens to be also a financial and tourism hub.
Check out our conversation with the director of Aeroports de Catalunya, Jordi Candela, where we talk about the challenges of managing small regional airports and seeking success through specialization.
