Vueling showcases European architecture with its latest designer livery

Barcelona is known all over the World because of its unique architecture, so no wonder that Barcelona-based Vueling chose celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Mies Award, one of Europe's most important and prestigious architecture prizes by co-organizing the "Linking Europe" competition, together with the with the Mies van der Rohe Foundation.

The Mies van der Rohe Foundation, named after the famous German-born architect, was created with the aim of rebuilding Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's 1929 Barcelona Pavilion built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, awards on a biennial basis, the highest recognition to a work of architecture in the European Union. The Mies awards, awarded on a biennal basis, started 25 years ago and are the highest recognition to a work of architecture in the European Union.

Architecture, engineerings and design students from all over Europe were invited to participate in the Linking Europe competition, invitations were sent to over 800 universities and colleges all over Europe, asking them to come up with a creative design for the livery of one of Vueling's Airbus A320s.

The theme of this competition was "The Construction of Europe through Cities and Culture" and entries needed to take into account the following topics: the connection and interaction between European cities ("connection" understood in a broad sense, including cultural and artistic links), the aims of the Mies van der Rohe Foundation as a European cultural catalyst and the aims of Vueling as a dynamic airline connecting cities across Europe.

The winner was the “Where do you wanna wake up tomorrow?”  proposal sent by the team composed of Plarent Berhamaj and Paolo Nazzari. This project showcases some of Europe's best known monuments, all placed next to each other to emphasize European's unity in diversity. In the author's own words, they chose monuments for their work because they realized they are "such a powerful for people visiting cities other than their own".

As winners of the Linking Europe competition will now have it easy to visit some of these monuments, since, in addition to having their work painted on the sides of one of Vueling's Airbus A320s, they will each get five return tickets each to a city of their choice within the Vueling network.
